Last night I had the pleasure of attending a dinner hosted by Corporate Knights in celebration of the Best 50 Corporate Citizens announced yesterday. I was thrilled that TELUS placed 10th among 50 of the most respected and socially responsible organizations in the country, including VanCity and TD Bank. We are also the highest ranking telco named to the list which celebrates top Canadian companies for their commitment to fostering healthy environments and responsible use of carbon, water, waste, and energy.
I am tremendously proud to be part of a team that is so committed to the health and well-being of communities across the country, and this recognition by Corporate Knights acknowledges the numerous initiatives our team has undertaken in recent years, including:
- Creating innovative and sustainable office buildings and world-class energy efficient Intelligent Internet Data Centres that meet the highest Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification;
- Implementing industry leading recycling programs to dispose of equipment such as decommissioned telephone poles and old wireless devices, diverting over 8.2 million kilograms of material from landfills in 2012; and
- Leveraging our advanced telephone, messaging and video conferencing technologies to move ideas instead of people.
As a result of these initiatives, we are making excellent progress on our targets to reduce our energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions by 10 per cent and 25 per cent respectively by 2020 over our 2009 levels.
